Is living-out allowance (LOA) taxable in Canada?

Usually not, when the job counts as a special work site: the work is temporary, you keep a home you don't rent out, it's too far to go home each day (CRA's rule of thumb is more than 80 km), and you're away at least 36 hours. You and the employer fill out Form TD4 and the LOA stays off your T4. If those don't all fit, the LOA is taxed like wages. Then the labour mobility deduction can win some of it back: up to $10,000 a year starting with 2026.

General information, not tax advice. Check with the CRA or a tax professional before you file.

When LOA is tax-free

Most union LOA, subsistence and board allowances are paid because the job is too far from home to drive every day. The Income Tax Act lets an employer leave a reasonable board and lodging allowance out of your income when you work at a special work site 1. CRA lists the conditions, and all of them have to fit 2:

A camp far from any town has its own version of the rule. CRA generally calls a work location remote when it's 80 km or more from the nearest community of at least 1,000 people 4. At a remote work location the employer doesn't use a TD4 3.

Form TD4

Form TD4, Declaration of Exemption – Employment at a Special Work Site, is how your employer leaves the allowance out of your income. You and the employer fill it out when you start at the site, or when your situation there changes 5. The employer keeps it with your payroll records. Nobody sends it to the CRA 2,5.

With a TD4 done, the allowance doesn't go in box 14 of your T4 2. If tax is coming off your LOA on your first stub of a call that should qualify, ask the payroll office about the TD4 right away.

When LOA is taxed

If the conditions don't all fit, the employer doesn't fill out a TD4 and the allowance counts as your income. The same goes for any part of an allowance that's more than a reasonable amount 3. A few ways that happens:

A taxed cash allowance is treated like wages. Income tax, CPP and EI come off it, and it shows on your T4 in box 14, with code 30 for board and lodging or code 40 for other taxable allowances 2.

Getting some back: the labour mobility deduction

The labour mobility deduction is for tradespeople and apprentices in construction who pay their own way to work away from home 6. Starting with the 2026 tax year, the law allows up to $10,000 a year, and your temporary lodging has to be at least 120 km closer to the work site than your home 8,9,10. For 2025 the limits were $4,000 and 150 km 6. The $10,000 goes up with inflation from 2027 9.

When we checked, CRA's guide and Form T777 still showed the 2025 numbers 6,7. The 2026 numbers come from the Act itself 8.

To claim it, fill out the labour mobility part on page 2 of Form T777 and put the result on line 22900 of your return 6,7.

Where a taxed LOA matters. The Act doesn't let you claim a cost that an allowance pays for, unless that allowance was included in your income 8. So a tax-free LOA blocks the lodging it covers, but a taxed LOA doesn't. CRA's guide states the rule without that exception 6. If your LOA was taxed and you plan to claim, keep your T4 and pay stubs and check with a tax preparer before you file.

A worked example

A 10-week call, LOA taxed

Assumptions, made up for the example: 2026 tax year. You live in Edmonton and take a 10-week call at a site 450 km away. Your employer pays LOA but taxes it, so there's no TD4. You rent a room 15 km from the site for $1,300 a month and keep your house. You drive up once and home once. You earn $40,000 on the job.

Cost you paid yourselfAmount
Room near the site, 2.5 months × $1,300$3,250.00
Fuel for the one round trip, from receipts$180.00
Meals on the drive up and the drive home, from receipts$45.00
Eligible costs$3,475.00

The room is 435 km closer to the site than your house, well past the 120 km test, and you're away far longer than 36 hours 8. The limits are $10,000 for the year and half of the $40,000 you earned there, $20,000 8. Both are higher than your costs, so you can deduct the full $3,475 on Form T777 and line 22900 6,7.

A deduction comes off your income, not off your tax. How much tax it saves depends on your tax rate. At a 30% rate, for example, $3,475 saves about $1,042.

Had the LOA been tax-free with a TD4, it would never have been in your income. But then the room it paid for couldn't go on the claim 8.

Questions

Does LOA go on my T4?

Not when you and your employer have filled out a TD4 for a special work site. When it's taxable, it's in box 14 with code 30 for board and lodging or code 40 for other taxable allowances, and income tax, CPP and EI come off it.

Is there a distance rule for tax-free LOA?

CRA generally treats a site more than 80 km from your home by the usual route as too far to go home each day. It can accept less, looking at shift length, rest time, roads and weather, your health and travel time.

Can I claim the labour mobility deduction if my LOA is tax-free?

Not for the lodging a tax-free allowance pays for. The Income Tax Act only lets an allowance sit beside the claim when it was taxed as income. Costs the allowance doesn't cover can still count if you meet the other rules.

How much is the labour mobility deduction for 2026?

Up to $10,000 a year starting with the 2026 tax year, when your temporary lodging is at least 120 km closer to the site than your home. For 2025 it was $4,000 and 150 km. You claim it on Form T777 and line 22900.
